Practicing Good Customer Service Begins at Home

We all have been in classes on how to treat our customers.  We have heard that the customer is always right along with lots of questionable sayings.  I often believe that we treat guests in our houses better then we treat family members.  Suppose I came to your house and you offered me a drink and I spilled it.  You might say to me that you are sorry that it happened and begin cleaning it up for me.  If this occurred with a family member spilling something I bet there would be a different approach.  It seems to me in the beginning of every relationship we do practice good customer service and then after a while we forget the basics.

There are some real basic customer service rules that should be practiced at home

  1. When was the last time that you thanked your children, spouse for doing something that they always do?
  2. When was the last time you opened the door for a family member?
  3. Do you stay calm at home when you have to talk to a family member who did not follow through?
  4. Do you acknowledge with a smile and a greeting when family members enter a room?
  5. Do you acknowledge and compliment family members when they accomplish something positive.
  6. Do you do something special everyday for a loved one?
  7. Do you tell family members how nice they look when they wear something new?
  8. When was the last time you wrote your loved one a thank you note or just a nice “thinking of you note” or a phone call to say I was thinking of you?

What kinds of things do you do at home and in the office that get people to know your care about them?  What things have others done that have impressed you in customer service?
