I hate to admit this but I have been in this business since the CETA days, I was a counselor then and started one of the first job clubs in the US. I practiced what I preached. We did not give jobs away we help you find a job. That was my cry to all. I had the sign behind my desk to prove it. “Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day, teach him to fish (and he won’t want to work he will want to fish)” I would say proudly. The clients back then had reasonably good skill and a work ethic. What we gave them was good and many were grateful for our help. Then we changed the sign on our door to JTPA the organization was different but the clients were similar and we did not change our programs. As far as the clients went they could not see any changes. We could have let the sign the same. Again we have changed our name and still offering the same programs. Many of our clients have changed; we now have many people on welfare. Many or our clients today do not have a work ethic, social skills or education to offer our new Client the Employer. We send people who know how to find a job but not how to stay on the job. I don’t believe that I am saying this but I think I would rather give a job to a client and then spend more time on how to keep the job. I am not sure that learning how to write a resume for some of our clients is what they need. Question: What kinds of programs is your office offering to clients that feature, social skills, how to make friends, how to stay on the job and how to get raises and get advancement
